According to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, utility-scale solar power produces between 394 and 447 MWh per acre per year. Thus, an acre of solar panels producing zero-emissions electricity saves between 267,526 to 303,513 pounds, or 121 to 138 metric tons, of carbon dioxide per year. PV panels generate electricity directly from sunlight via an electric process that occurs naturally in certain types of material. Groups of PV cells are configured into modules and arrays, which can be used to power any number of electrical loads. Supplementing solar PV
Having a Solar PV system and generating your own energy is great, but storing that energy to be used when the sun isn’t shining is even better! For those, who are out at work during the day, or have systems where more is being generated than used, a battery is highly recommended. All the unused electricity is stored at the time of generation and then used when really needed, especially in the evenings when the array is not generating power. The batteries can also be topped up at night from the national grid. This means you are more likely to be using very low-cost electricity.
Do I need PV to have a battery installed?
Battery storage is a great way to keep any excess generated by solar energy, rather than it going on to the national grid. However, this technology can be taken advantage of even if you can or do not have solar PV. By charging the batteries up at night on the off-peak tariff, usually midnight to 7am and using the electricity in the day can save 60% per KWH. The payback period could be as little as 4 years.
