Can a battery be installed without solar panels
home battery storage

Solar PV systems are key for manufacturing and commercial properties aiming at carbon neutrality and sustainability. By harnessing clean energy, they cut costs, reduce emissions, and meet government targets. In the UK, ambitious emission reduction goals make solar PV adoption financially attractive. BEST Renewables provides expertise in designing, implementing, and maintaining tailored solar PV systems, aiding businesses on their path to a sustainable future.

Absolutely, when you think of a home battery storage system, your mind probably jumps straight to solar panels. But here’s a surprising fact: battery storage can help you cut electricity bills even if you don’t have solar PV installed.

How does this work.

A battery storage system stores electricity for later use. Without solar, it charges from the grid—ideally when electricity is cheap—and discharges when rates are high. These systems are a key part of making your home more energy-efficient and less reliant on fluctuating utility prices, and particularly useful when used with smart home energy apps. Most battery systems have software installed that regulate when and how energy is used. This is particularly helpful if the occupants are out all day and use most energy of an evening.

Most UK energy bills will have an annual electricity consumption figure for each property, usually on the first two pages of the bill, so one can work out how much savings can be made per year. All energy companies have different tarrifs, so it is advisable to shop around but typically, as of 2025 Overnight energy cost are around 7p per KW. A 9.5KW battery therefore if set to charge overnight would cost £0.66. This then is used during peak times when the cost of buying electricity is 30p per KW.

30p X 9.5 = £2.85    giving a saving of £2.19 per day.   That is a saving of £799.35 per year.

Backup Power & Energy Security

Some battery systems work like uninterrupted power supplies keeping essential services on. This is particularly useful for businesses that require data connecting to offsite servers or have electrical equipment such as freezers that need to be kept on at all times.
